July 2024 – What We’ve Been Up To

Exciting Projects and Developments

This month at Twilo has been full of exciting new projects and significant progress. One of the standout initiatives has been working with a new health-tech business, Beyond. This groundbreaking project aims to make advanced health technology accessible to everyone. Focusing on health prevention and optimisation, Beyond offers comprehensive testing, personalised insights, and innovative therapies. Having completed the NameGen and brand strategy work, I am now working with management to develop the commercial plan to bring this proposition to market.

Another major highlight has been the reopening of the Geek Retreat store in Bristol, located on St. Augustine’s Parade near the Hippodrome. The store, now under the ownership of the successful Newport store franchisee, reopened its doors on July 27. At Head Office, we’ve been working on ambitious growth plans for Geek Retreat, securing new funding, and planning the rollout of new programmes.

At Twilo, Growth40 has also ramped up with several exciting campaigns designed to drive new opportunities into the agency. We’re supporting companies in securing funding through a digital grants programme, ensuring they have the resources to deliver their projects successfully. Twilo is here to help companies secure the funding and deliver the digital projects that will bring a step-change to their business.

On a personal note, I achieved a significant milestone by climbing Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) through the night, raising £2,181. Following a spinal injury 3.5 years ago, this was by far the most challenging endeavour I’ve undertaken. The darkness and lack of sleep added a unique dimension to the physical challenge of reaching the summit in around 3 hours. The weather was incredibly cold with drizzle, and walking through the fog and clouds was an unforgettable experience. As the first light appeared around 4 a.m., the sensation of being 3,500 feet in the sky was truly inspiring.

What a fun-packed July I’ve had!

This month was all about spending time with friends and family—watching the Euros, having a spa day, and visiting Manchester and Nottingham.

As part of my Mum’s birthday present, we booked a beautiful spa day at Oulton Hall for some well-deserved R&R. The next two weekends consisted of me visiting my friends in Manchester and Nottingham to see their new homes and experience their local pubs! I most recently joined a running club, which I’m excited to get stuck into (famous last words!)

For Twilo, Wayne and I visited Glasgow to meet with a new client, alongside the talented Jen, who delivered an insightful brand workshop. The team and I have also been working on new client proposals.

Three new starters joined us in July: Ryan, Aleena, and Amit, who have all settled in great with the rest of the team. All three are super talented and will bring in many opportunities for Twilo.

Running in the Sun and Running Late for the Cinema

July has been a busy month, and I’ve been setting up a lot of new and exciting campaigns for clients across Google Ads, Meta Ads, and LinkedIn Ads!

July began with some amazing news, as it’s been three months since I joined Twilo. I’m happy to announce that I have passed my first 12-week period, so I will be staying! It’s also been great to welcome my new colleagues and treat ourselves to some pizza for lunch.

Outside of work, it’s been tough but fun to get ready for the new football season with preseason training and friendlies. Despite the heat, it was a big 7-0 win for my team last weekend, where I played the full 90 minutes and grabbed an assist for our 5th goal. I also saw one of the big films of the summer—Twisters. I really enjoyed it, despite getting there just as the film began, as my dog decided to sunbath in some grass whilst on his walk. As you can see in the image, he knew exactly what he was doing!

Free Gigs and New Projects on the Horizon

I spent the weekend checking out the free gigs around Sheffield while the Tramlines Festival was on. It was a pleasure to watch my one-year-old daughter headbang, dance, and interact with everyone while we were out. We’re heading to a festival next month, so there was anxiety about how she would find it, but it’s safe to say she loves a party!

With my first week at Twilo now complete, I’ve already been exposed to a variety of projects. I’m looking forward to getting stuck into the new projects on the horizon and helping Twilo’s clients grow digitally.

July Blog

July has been an exciting month for me. I’ve been down to see old friends that I have not seen in a long while, and I’ve been accepted for my mortgage! Just need to get past the long wait for paperwork.

I’ve been working on some exciting projects, and I am particularly excited to work with White Rose Finance again to bring them another financial journey to their broker application.

Integrating AWS with OpenCart

This month, we’ve been working on an AWS solution for OpenCart that will allow us to keep images on the cloud for when clients need big e-commerce solutions with thousands of products. It has been very challenging, but it will be an extremely valuable addition to future e-commerce websites we build in the future that require it.

Day enjoying the sun

To finish off the month right, I travelled down to Nuneaton for a BBQ on the Saturday. We had the hot tub out, and for once, the sun was on our side. The food included was the traditional sausages and burgers but also pork belly and chicken skewers. My friend thought he had overbought on the pork belly, but they went down extremely quickly. We then ended with some simple card games, one of which was Unstable Unicorns. This is a very silly game where the goal is to get six unicorns in your stable, and there are many cards that allow you to kill or steal your opponent’s unicorns or give buffs to yours.

An Incredibly Productive Month!

Diverse Projects

This month has been incredibly productive and diverse in terms of the projects I’ve tackled. I started with an OpenCart modification for British Made Interiors, focusing on export and import functionalities. This project was particularly interesting as it required a deep dive into the specifics of OpenCart and ensuring seamless integration for the client’s needs. Following that, I worked on an interactive map for Benihana, a global restaurant chain. This map is responsive and provides location pins for all their branches worldwide, enhancing the user experience and making it easier for customers to find their nearest Benihana location.

Optimising for Mobile

Next, I shifted my focus to the mobile view of the booking calendar for another client. This project was all about optimising the user interface for mobile devices, ensuring that visitors could easily book their visits on the go. Additionally, I updated the table schema and wrote code to streamline the export and import process for Phoenix Order Portal, a client’s company. This involved meticulous planning and execution to ensure data integrity and efficiency. Lastly, I managed a server migration from Server 5 to Server 7, which was a critical task to enhance the system’s performance and reliability. Each of these projects presented unique challenges and learning opportunities.

A Rewarding Month

From enhancing e-commerce functionalities to improving user interfaces and managing complex data processes, I’ve gained valuable experience and insights. It’s been a rewarding month, and I’m excited to see how these improvements will benefit my clients and their customers. Looking forward to more such engaging projects in the future!

Exploring New Plugins and Creating Seamless User Experiences

This month, I’ve been thrilled to work on designing Trianco’s website, exploring new plugins, and creating a seamless user experience and interface. I’m also excited about collaborating with an enthusiastic client who shares my design vision. Weekends have been a joy, filled with playtime with my two-year-old and grocery runs. Looking ahead, I can’t wait to reunite with an old school friend this coming weekend.

July has been a blend of professional satisfaction and personal joy, and I look forward to more adventures in August.

Excited to Have Joined Twilo!

It has been an exciting month for me as I recently joined the Twilo team as a Front-end Developer. Over the past few weeks, I have spent most of the time understanding the company’s values, culture, and goals, and I am thrilled to be a part of such an innovative company.

During my first week, I spent most of the time getting familiar with the tech stack and understanding the architecture of existing web projects. One of the standout tools I have encountered is Grilla, a company’s own SaaS framework. Grilla significantly streamlines front-end development, making the process both faster and more efficient. I also started working on developing new web pages, contributing to ongoing projects, and collaborating with my new teammates.

Outside of work, I continue to indulge in my passion for cooking. Weekends provide the perfect opportunity for me to explore and expand my culinary skills. This past weekend, I learned to make “Shahi Paneer,” a rich and creamy Indian curry. Experimenting with new recipes is always a delightful experience for me, allowing me to blend flavours and techniques from different cuisines.

Overall, my first weeks at Twilo have been both productive and fulfilling, and I am looking forward to contributing further to the team and the exciting projects ahead.
