The latest in our Twilo Taste Test series, the team tackle the KFC Original Recipe Vegan Burger!
Launched in January 2020 as part of ‘Vaganuary’, KFC’s attempt at a meat-free alternative is here and it’s been greeted with good reviews from the public, so this week the team gave it a go, and here’s what we thought to it…

How does the KFC Original Recipe Vegan Burger taste?
Flavour wise I thought it was very close to the chicken burger, with the usual KFC coating. It seemed quite stingy with the vegan mayo which was disappointing.
What’s the texture like?
Although better than expected the texture is still distinguishable from chicken, slightly more mushy. If you’ve had Quorn fillets before these will be familiar.
Do you prefer the Vegan Burger to the chicken version?
There is not a lot between them, I think the texture of the chicken burger real mayo still just edge it.
How does it make you feel knowing that no chickens were sacrificed for your lunch?
It makes me warm and fuzzy inside.
How would you score the burger out of 10?

How does the KFC Original Recipe Vegan Burger taste?
As I do prefer the Zinger Burger I found it quite bland. However for a regular burger, it was tasty enough.
What’s the texture like?
I’m not much of a breaded chicken/vegan burger type. So not much of a fan of the outer layout of the vegan chicken.
Do you prefer the Vegan Burger to the chicken version?
No. To be fair, I’ve only ever had the spicy kfc burgers when I’m on holiday.
How does it make you feel knowing that no chickens were sacrificed for your lunch?
It’s a bit of a difficult question this. If an individual is strongly against the killing of animals for mass production, you wouldn’t ever buy from a restaurant chain that specifically sells chickens.
How would you score the burger out of 10?

Probably, as I have friends that do love KFC, I also have friends that live off a plant based diet. It suits all.

How does the KFC Original Recipe Vegan Burger taste?
In terms of taste it’s exactly like the usual KFC Fillet Burger with the Colonel’s secret recipe.
What’s the texture like?
Good! It’s not quite chicken, but it’s 80% of the way there. I’m not sure what’s gone into it to get the texture right, but I question how much of KFC’s chicken is actually chicken, so it wasn’t far off.
Do you prefer the Vegan Burger to the chicken version?
Normally I would give the edge to the ‘chicken’ version but as I’m in the middle of ‘Veganuary’ I wouldn’t put one ahead of the other.
How does it make you feel knowing that no chickens were sacrificed for your lunch?
Actually good as I intend to stop buying mass-produced meat given the impact it has on the planet.
How would you score the burger out of 10?

Would you have the KFC Vegan Burger again?
If I had to eat KFC again I’d choose between the Vegen Burger and the Wicked Zinger Burger, so it’s another option, but I’d never pass a Maccie D’s to get to a KFC!

Tasted like a Birdseye frozen breaded chicken fillet.

Good texture of processed chicken.
Do you prefer the Vegan Burger to the chicken version?
I would happily have this as an alternative, prefer the coating of the chicken version. I also don’t feel over-faced and too full, like I would normally.
How does it make you feel knowing that no chickens were sacrificed for your lunch?
I’m happy knowing it didn’t come at the cost of a chicken life.
